✈️ ✈️ India & China Reconnect: Direct Flights Restart from Kolkata

Updated on October 27, 2025

After a gap of more than four years, India and China have resumed direct flights between Kolkata and Guangzhou, marking a significant step toward restoring people-to-people and business connectivity between the two neighboring countries.

The first IndiGo flight took off from Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at 10 PM on Sunday, carrying 176 passengers to Guangzhou. This marks the resumption of direct air services that were suspended in early 2020 following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent border tensions in eastern Ladakh.

🛫 Direct Flights Between India and China Resume After 5 Years

Before the pandemic, direct commercial flights between Kolkata and Guangzhou operated regularly, supporting trade, tourism, and academic travel. However, flights were halted due to global travel restrictions and diplomatic challenges.

With IndiGo restarting daily non-stop flights on the Kolkata–Guangzhou route, passengers can now enjoy convenient and faster travel between the two countries. The A320 Neo aircraft will operate this route, offering affordable and comfortable options for business travelers, students, and tourists alike.

🌏 Symbol of Renewed Friendship and Economic Cooperation

The resumption of India–China direct flights is being seen as a positive sign of improving diplomatic ties. To mark the occasion, a ceremonial lamp-lighting event was held at the Kolkata airport. One of the passengers participated in the ceremony, symbolizing the spirit of renewed friendship and cooperation between the two Asian giants.

Officials noted that the reopening of this air corridor is expected to boost trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. Guangzhou, known as China’s business hub, and Kolkata, a major trade and cultural center in eastern India, share a strong historical connection in commerce and education.

✈️ IndiGo’s Role in Strengthening India–China Connectivity

As India’s largest airline, IndiGo continues to expand its international flight network, connecting major Asian destinations. The Kolkata–Guangzhou direct flight is part of its strategy to enhance regional connectivity and support business travelers and students flying to China.

Daily non-stop services on this route are expected to make travel smoother for professionals and families, eliminating the need for long layovers in other cities.
