Rs.565 One Banana – Istanbul Airport Dubbed the World’s Most Expensive for Food and Beverages

Travelers across the globe are no strangers to inflated airport prices, but Istanbul Airport has taken things to a whole new level. According to a report by The Mirror, this Turkish airport has gained a reputation as the world’s most expensive airport when it comes to food and drinks.

Passengers have shared jaw-dropping experiences of paying exorbitant prices for basic food items, with some even calling it “ridiculous.” A single banana is reportedly sold for £5 (₹565), and a pint of beer can cost as much as £15 (₹1,697) — prices that are far higher than many other major international airports.

A Pricey Pit Stop: Lasagna for ₹2,376?

Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera highlighted Istanbul Airport as the most expensive airport in Europe for food. One Italian traveler was shocked to pay £21 (₹2,376) for just 90 grams of lasagna—a portion he described as unimpressive and lacking in quality.

“The Prices Are Ridiculous,” Say Frustrated Flyers

Travelers have taken to forums like Reddit to express their frustration. One user wrote, “With all due respect to Istanbul, the prices are more than exaggerated. They’re two to four times higher than what I usually see at Frankfurt Airport. The terminal is magnificent, but the food pricing ruined the experience.”

Others compared the pricing with U.S. airports and couldn’t understand the steep markup. “My sister recently visited Dalaman and paid €40 (₹3,882) for two Big Mac meals. Meanwhile, I was just in the U.S., and food at LaGuardia and Orlando MCO was reasonably priced by comparison,” shared another traveler.

Premium Prices, Average Quality?

To make matters worse, travelers have also complained about the quality of the food served. One reviewer said his overpriced lasagna resembled “a piece of brick with some grated cheese and a fake basil leaf,” highlighting the wide gap between price and value.

Even well-known fast food chains like McDonald’s and Burger King aren’t spared from criticism, as their usual budget-friendly meals are priced far above average.

Why Are Food Prices So High at Istanbul Airport?

Though there’s no official explanation, many speculate that limited competition, high rent for vendors, and the airport’s captive audience contribute to the steep pricing. With few options available, passengers often have no choice but to pay premium rates—even for a simple banana.

Final Thoughts

If you’re flying through Istanbul Airport, brace yourself for some of the highest food and drink prices in the world. While the terminal itself is a marvel of modern design, the overpriced snacks and meals might leave a bad taste in your mouth—and a big dent in your wallet.
