Mumbai to Launch India’s First Electric Water Taxi Service

Mumbai is set to welcome the country’s first electric water taxi, which will soon operate between the Gateway of India and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). This eco-friendly transport initiative aims to provide a convenient commuting option for JNPT employees and ease the city’s road traffic congestion. The service is expected to begin next month following an agreement between Mazagon Dock Shipbuilding Limited (MDL) and JNPT.
Tackling Mumbai’s Traffic Woes
Traffic jams are one of Mumbai’s biggest challenges, and authorities are increasingly looking toward waterways and ropeways as alternative transport solutions. Although water taxis and ferry services were introduced earlier, high fuel costs and expensive ticket rates limited their popularity. The arrival of an electric water taxi is seen as a game-changer, offering an affordable, sustainable, and efficient mode of travel for daily commuters.
Made in India Electric Taxi
Initially, there were plans to import these e-taxis, but MDL took the initiative to design and build them domestically. The company has successfully manufactured two electric water taxis, which will soon be deployed for regular service. This marks a significant step in India’s move toward greener, locally developed transport solutions.
Features of the E-Water Taxi
The newly developed electric water taxi comes with impressive specifications:
- Length: 13.27 meters
- Width: 3.05 meters
- Seating Capacity: 25 passengers
- Battery Power: 64 kWh
- Range: 4 hours on a single charge
- Top Speed: Up to 14 knots
- Amenities: Fully air-conditioned interiors for passenger comfort
With its modern design and eco-friendly technology, the electric water taxi is expected to not only improve connectivity but also set a benchmark for sustainable transport in India.
