Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Inaugurate Navi Mumbai International Airport Phase 1 — A Landmark in India’s Aviation Growth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday, marking a historic milestone in India’s aviation expansion. The new airport is expected to reduce congestion at Mumbai’s existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and further strengthen the city’s position as a global aviation hub.

India’s Largest Greenfield Airport Project

The Navi Mumbai International Airport, developed under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model, is being built at an estimated cost of ₹19,650 crore. Once operational, it will function alongside CSMIA, making Mumbai one of the few cities in the world to operate two international airports.

Design and Passenger Capacity

Spread across 1,160 hectares, NMIA is designed to handle up to 90 million passengers per year and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo when fully operational.
To enhance convenience, the airport will feature an Automated People Mover (APM) system connecting all four terminals, along with a landside APM for smooth access between the city and airport zones.

Sustainable and Future-Ready Infrastructure

The Navi Mumbai International Airport stands out for its eco-friendly design and sustainable initiatives. It will include:

  • Dedicated storage for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
  • 47 MW of solar power generation for energy efficiency
  • Electric bus services for green ground transport
  • India’s first water taxi connectivity, offering a modern, eco-conscious travel alternative

Strategic Importance and Connectivity

NMIA will greatly improve air traffic efficiency, boost Mumbai’s global connectivity, and enhance passenger experience through advanced facilities and smart systems. The airport’s design ensures seamless integration with metro lines, expressways, and other public transport networks, making travel to and from the airport faster and more convenient.

With its world-class infrastructure, sustainability-driven approach, and strategic location, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to become a game-changer for India’s aviation landscape and a key driver of economic growth.
