Pune District’s tourism sector is poised for a transformative leap with the introduction of ropeways at eight prominent tourist destinations. This initiative is a key component of the Central Government’s Parvatmala Yojana, a nationwide scheme designed to enhance hill areas and promote tourism. The project aims to improve accessibility to forts, pilgrimage sites, and scenic spots, ultimately driving economic growth and boosting local development.
Since assuming office, the Modi government has prioritized tourism as a catalyst for economic progress. The upcoming ropeway projects in Pune district are a testament to this commitment. These ropeways will not only make remote and historically significant locations more accessible but also attract a larger number of tourists, benefiting local businesses and communities.
The Maharashtra state government has recently greenlit these ropeway projects, and an official order has been issued to commence work. The execution will be overseen by National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), under the supervision of the central government. The selected sites for the ropeways include:
- Khandoba, Nimgaon (Khed Taluka)
- Bhimashankar (Khed Taluka)
- Shivneri (Junnar Taluka)
- Lenyadri (Junnar Taluka)
- Darya Ghat (Junnar Taluka)
- Sinhagad (Pune Taluka)
- Jejuri (Purandar Taluka)
- Rajgad (Velhe Taluka)
Of these, three locations are in Junnar Taluka, two in Khed Taluka, and the remaining in Pune, Purandar, and Velhe Talukas. This strategic distribution ensures a balanced development across the district.
For land acquisition, the government has outlined two approaches. If the land is under the Public Works Department (PWD), it will be leased to NHLML for 30 years. In cases where the land is privately owned or under other government departments, the PWD will acquire it before transferring it to NHLML.
Upon completion, these ropeways are expected to significantly increase tourist footfall, fostering the overall development of the region. The project is set to enhance Pune district’s appeal as a tourist hotspot, driving economic growth and creating new opportunities for local residents. This initiative marks a major step forward in positioning Pune as a key destination for both domestic and international travelers.
