🚀 Elon Musk’s Starlink Gets Approval to Launch Satellite Internet in India: Plans, Pricing & Coverage Explained

In a major milestone for India’s digital infrastructure, Elon Musk’s Starlink has officially received the government’s go-ahead to offer satellite-based internet services in the country. With a Unified License for Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) now secured, Starlink is set to revolutionize internet access in remote, rural, and underserved regions of India.

📡 What Is Starlink?

Starlink is a satellite internet project developed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, using low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to deliver high-speed internet anywhere in the world. Unlike traditional broadband, which relies on cables and towers, Starlink uses a network of thousands of satellites to beam internet signals directly to user terminals.

✅ License Approval & Government Mandates

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has granted Starlink a Unified License, enabling the company to offer satellite internet services across India. In addition, India’s space regulator, IN-SPACe, approved the use of Starlink’s Gen1 satellite constellation for five years or until the satellites reach end-of-life.

To operate in India, Starlink must comply with strict local regulations, including:

  • Real-time location tracking of user terminals.
  • Registration of each device with Indian authorities.
  • At least 20% of ground equipment to be made in India within five years.

These conditions align with the government’s “Make in India” and national security goals.

💸 Pricing & Equipment

Though official pricing is yet to be announced, early estimates suggest:

  • Monthly subscription: ₹2,500–₹3,000 for basic internet access.
  • One-time hardware cost: Around ₹33,000 for the Starlink kit, which includes a satellite dish, Wi-Fi router, mounting tripod, and cables.

While Starlink may appear expensive compared to traditional broadband, it targets areas where regular ISPs are unavailable or unreliable.

⚡ Speed & Performance

Starlink is expected to offer internet speeds ranging from 50 Mbps to 200 Mbps, with a latency of under 50 milliseconds, ideal for streaming, video conferencing, and even gaming. The service will be significantly faster and more stable than older satellite systems, which suffer from higher latency.

🌍 Rollout Plan & Availability

Starlink will initially focus on:

  • Remote villages
  • Border areas
  • Hilly terrains
  • Tribal regions

A limited pilot is expected to begin by late 2025, with broader commercial rollout planned for 2026, pending final approvals for spectrum allocation and device clearances.

The Indian government has capped the total number of Starlink subscribers at 2 million users for now, due to bandwidth and regulatory limitations.
