Sindhudurg Airport Gets DGCA Approval for 24×7 All-Weather Operations, Boosting Konkan Connectivity
Updated on January 3, 2026
Sindhudurg Airport has achieved a major milestone after receiving approval from India’s aviation safety regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), to operate round-the-clock, including during low visibility and adverse weather conditions. The development is expected to significantly strengthen air connectivity and tourism across the Konkan region of Maharashtra.
Operated by IRB Infrastructure Developers, the airport began commercial operations in October 2021 and has steadily expanded its operational capabilities. The latest approval marks a crucial step in positioning Sindhudurg as a reliable, year-round aviation hub.
Certified for IFR and Advanced Navigation Systems
With this clearance, Sindhudurg Airport is now certified for Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) operations. This allows aircraft to land and take off safely even during poor visibility or challenging weather conditions. The approval also includes satellite-based Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedures, along with the availability of a backup ground-based navigation aid.
Together, these systems provide precise instrument approach guidance while ensuring a dependable non-satellite alternative, enhancing safety and operational reliability for all aircraft types throughout the year. RNP defines the navigation accuracy required for specific airspace or approach procedures, enabling more efficient and safer flight operations.
Strengthening Airline Confidence and Regional Growth
Commenting on the development, Jai S. Sadana, Chief Adviser and Head at IRB Sindhudurg Airport, said the move would substantially improve the airport’s reliability and operational readiness. He added that 24×7 all-weather capability is expected to increase airline confidence, support consistent passenger traffic growth, and contribute to economic and tourism development across the Konkan belt.
Mumbai–Sindhudurg Flights to Improve Accessibility
Connectivity is set to improve further with the expected launch of the Mumbai–Sindhudurg route under the state’s regional air connectivity initiative in the coming months. This route will make air travel more convenient for Konkan residents while also attracting tourists from across the country.
Rising Passenger Traffic and Expanded Infrastructure
Reflecting growing demand, Sindhudurg Airport recorded nearly 11,000 passenger movements in December, the highest monthly figure since operations began. To support this growth, the airport has doubled its aircraft parking capacity from three to six stands, enabling it to handle increased flight frequency and future expansion.
A New Chapter for Konkan Aviation
With DGCA’s approval for 24×7 all-weather operations, Sindhudurg Airport is set to play a pivotal role in transforming air travel, tourism, and regional development in coastal Maharashtra—bringing the Konkan region closer to the rest of India, all year round.
