rail

Starting April 2025, Indian Railways has introduced updated luggage rules for passengers across all travel classes. These changes aim to enhance safety, optimize space usage, and provide a smoother journey for everyone on board. The revised guidelines specify luggage weight limits, bag dimensions, and items restricted during travel.

✅ How Much Luggage Can You Carry in Indian Trains?

The free luggage allowance varies based on the class of travel. Here’s a breakdown of the latest limits:

  • First AC (1A): Up to 70 kg without extra charges
  • Second AC (2A): Up to 50 kg
  • Sleeper Class (SL): Up to 40 kg
  • Second Class Non-AC: Up to 35 kg

These limits are carefully designed to prevent overcrowding in compartments and promote passenger comfort during long-distance train travel.

💡 Tip: If you’re carrying more than the allowed limit, you’ll need to pay additional charges or book your luggage through the luggage van.

📏 New Luggage Size Limit for Train Travel

To ensure luggage fits in designated storage areas, Indian Railways has introduced strict dimension rules:

  • Maximum luggage size (Length + Width + Height): 160 cm (62 inches)
  • For personal items like laptops, umbrellas, or small bags: up to 185 cm (72 inches)

These size limits help maintain clear walkways, reduce clutter in compartments, and enhance overall travel safety.

🚫 List of Prohibited Items on Indian Trains

Passengers are strictly prohibited from carrying the following items on board:

  • Explosives or flammable substances
  • Loaded firearms or sharp weapons
  • Leaking or corrosive liquids
  • Hazardous chemicals
  • Offensive or smelly materials

Carrying such items may lead to penalties, including fines or removal from the train. It’s strongly advised to check the official Indian Railways website or consult with station authorities before packing your bags.
